Sunrise-based Traditional Panchang

Lunar months are shown in both Amanta and Purnimanta conventions. Seasonal names follow the regular Purnimanta month; Adhika means an extra lunar month. Diwali / Lakshmi Puja uses a separate evening rule and can fall on a different date from sunrise-based Amavasya. Other seasonal names identify the Amavasya; they do not calculate separate ritual times.

Observing a Monday, Tuesday or Saturday new moon? Somvati · Bhaumvati · Shani Amavasya 2026

What is Amavasya?

Amavasya (अमावस्या) is the lunar phase of the New Moon in the Hindu calendar — the day when the Moon sits between the Earth and the Sun and is not visible in the night sky. Astronomically, this is the moment the Moon and Sun share the same ecliptic longitude (0° elongation).

It marks the end of the waning fortnight (Krishna Paksha) and the beginning of the waxing fortnight (Shukla Paksha). Many traditions observe Amavasya for ancestor worship (Shraddha/Tarpana), fasting, and specific temple rituals, while some regard it as inauspicious for starting new ventures.

This calculator identifies Amavasya using the traditional sunrise-based tithi rule: the civil calendar date assigned to Amavasya is the day whose sunrise falls within the Amavasya tithi window, computed for your exact location and timezone rather than a generic date-only approximation.

What is a Tithi?

A Tithi is a lunar day in the Hindu calendar. Unlike a solar (civil) day, it isn't a fixed 24-hour block — it's defined by the angular distance (elongation) between the Moon and the Sun as seen from Earth. One tithi spans exactly 12° of relative motion, so a full lunar month of 360° contains 30 tithis.

Because the Moon's orbital speed varies along its elliptical path, tithis don't have a fixed duration — they typically range from about 19 to 26 hours. This is why a tithi can start and end at different clock times each month, and occasionally spans zero or two sunrises.

Amavasya corresponds to the 30th tithi. This calculator computes the precise moment the Moon-Sun elongation crosses 348° (the start of the Amavasya tithi) using an astronomical bisection search against NASA JPL ephemeris data, then finds the matching new moon at 0°/360° elongation to mark the tithi's end.

What is a Kshaya Tithi?

A Kshaya Tithi is a "lost" or "skipped" lunar day — one that does not span a single sunrise at all. Since a tithi typically lasts 19–26 hours (close to, but not always longer than, the ~24-hour gap between sunrises), it's possible for a tithi to begin after one sunrise and end before the next sunrise occurs.

When this happens, that tithi has no sunrise to "rule" it. Per traditional Panchang rules, it doesn't get its own civil calendar day — it is considered kshaya (decayed/lost), and the calendar attaches it to the day governed by the preceding sunrise instead.

This calculator flags results as Kshaya whenever an Amavasya date was determined by this rarer fallback rule rather than a direct sunrise-within-tithi match, so you can verify unusual dates against your own tradition's conventions.

About This Project

The Amavasya Panchang Calculator computes hyper-local, astronomically accurate Amavasya (new moon) dates for any location on Earth, following the traditional Hindu Panchang sunrise-based tithi system rather than simplified date-only approximations.

Under the hood, it uses the Skyfield astronomical library together with NASA JPL's DE421 ephemeris to calculate precise Sun and Moon positions, then applies a bisection search to find the exact moment each lunar month's elongation reaches 348° (the start of the Amavasya tithi). It cross-references this against local sunrise times — computed for your exact latitude, longitude, and timezone — to determine which civil date "owns" each Amavasya, correctly handling edge cases like Kshaya tithis.

Results can be exported as an ICS calendar file for import into Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, or Outlook.

This is an independent project and is not affiliated with any religious organization. Panchang conventions can vary by region and tradition, so please cross-check important dates against your own lineage's practice where it matters.
